'Not able to open downloaded file' error when downloading an Adobe application
When you use the Adobe Support Advisor to determine the cause of a failed product download, the Download Module returns the following error:
'Not able to open the downloaded file.'
Do either of the following:
Fix permissions on the folder that contains the downloaded files
Using Finder, navigate to the folder that contains your downloaded file. If you need help locating the folder, see Find downloaded files.
- Click the lock icon in the lower-right corner. Enter your administrator user name and password when prompted, and click OK.
- Select your user in the Name column and choose Read & Write in the Privilege column.
- Click the Gear icon and choose Apply To Enclosed Items.
- Double-click the .dmg file that you downloaded from Adobe.com to start the installation.
Change permissions in Windows Vista and Windows 7
- Choose Organize > Folder And Search Options, and click the View tab.
- At the bottom of the Advanced Settings section, deselect Use Sharing wizard (Recommended) and click OK.
Navigate to the folder that contains your downloaded file. If you need help locating the folder, see Find downloaded files.
- In the Attributes section, deselect the Read-Only option.
- Click Apply, and then click OK to close the Confirm Attribute Changes dialog box.
- In the Security tab, make sure that Administrators and System are listed and that permissions are set to Full Control. If not, do the following:
- If the User Account Control (UAC) elevation prompt appears, follow the instructions to accept it.
- Select the Replace Owner On Subcontainers And Objects option and click Apply.
- In the Permissions tab, select the Replace Permission Entries On All Child Objects With Entries Shown Here That Apply To Child Objects option.
- Click OK and Yes to close all windows and dialog boxes until the folder's Properties window is closed.
- Double-click the .exe file that you downloaded to start the installation.
- Press F8 before Windows starts (when you see a message such as For Advanced Startup Options).
- Select Safe Mode from the list of startup options.
- If Safe Mode doesn't appear in each corner of the desktop, then repeat steps a-b.
- When Safe Mode appears in each corner of the desktop, then log in as administrator of the local machine.
Note: If a dialog box indicates that Windows is running in Safe Mode, click OK.
- In the View tab, scroll to the bottom of the Advanced Settings and deselect Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended). Click OK.
- Navigate to the folder that contains your downloaded files. If you need help locating the folder, see Find downloaded files (cpsid_50655).
- In the Attributes section of the General tab, deselect Read-Only.
- Click Apply, and then click OK to close the Confirm Attribute Changes dialog box.
- In the Security tab, make sure that Administrators and System are listed and permissions are set to Full Control.
- In the Owner tab of the Advanced Security Settings dialog box, select Administrators.
- Select the Replace Owner On Subcontainers And Objects option and click Apply.
- In the Permissions tab, select the Replace Permission Entries On All Child Objects With Entries Shown Here That Apply To Child Objects option.
- Click OK, and then click Yes in the Security dialog box.
- Click OK to close the folder's Properties dialog box.
- Double-click the .exe file that you downloaded to start the installation.
Move the downloaded files to a folder for which you have sufficient privileges
- Navigate to the folder that contains your downloaded files. If you need help locating the folder, see Find downloaded files (cpsid_50655).
- Drag the files to a folder for which you have Read & Write (Mac OS) or Full Control (Windows) permissions.
- Double-click the .exe file (Windows) or .dmg file (Mac OS) that you downloaded to start the installation.
This error indicates that you do not have sufficient permissions for the folder to which you're downloading, so the installer cannot start.
